Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has announced he will not seek re-election in the upcoming parliamentary elections, a surprise move that effectively ends his tenure and rules out any possibility of reappointment.
Majaliwa, 64, had previously indicated he would run for his legislative seat for a fourth term in October but reversed his decision on Wednesday, catching many by surprise.
Appointed prime minister in 2015, Majaliwa was once viewed as a potential successor to the late President John Magufuli following his death in 2021. He continued to serve under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who plans to seek re-election under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
His departure marks a significant moment ahead of Tanzania’s elections, as President Samia looks to consolidate her position while the CCM navigates internal dynamics and succession planning within its top leadership.
