Paul Biya to Seek Eighth Term in Cameroon’s October Elections

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya announced on Sunday that he will seek an eighth term in the country’s October elections, aiming to extend his nearly 43 years in power.

Biya, who is already the de facto candidate of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) as its leader, is one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. However, given his age, concerns about the 91-year-old president’s health and his capacity to govern have increasingly become a topic of national debate as the elections approach.
