Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu for failing to visit Yelwata, the community affected by recent killings in Benue State, during his trip to the state. Obi said the excuse of bad roads is not a valid reason for the president’s absence from the troubled area.
In a post on his X handle on Friday, Obi emphasized that true leadership is defined by courage, presence, and responsibility in the face of adversity.
“Leadership demands sacrifice and the willingness to take risks, especially when citizens are in distress. Excuses and complaints have no place in true leadership. Leaders are meant to show up, make sacrifices, and provide direction, especially in critical moments,” Obi stated.
He added that while he does not support the idea of the president exposing himself to unnecessary danger, citing bad roads as the reason for not visiting Yelwata is unacceptable especially given that the president was already present in the state.
“This was not an unplanned visit. Enough time had passed since the killings to make proper arrangements. Failing to reach Yelwata sends the wrong message to grieving communities seeking comfort and reassurance from their leaders,” Obi added.
