A former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has warned that the Federal Government may withdraw electricity subsidies if the financial burden continues to escalate.
Amadi noted that while the move could reduce the government’s debt load, it would be unwise at this time, pointing out that many developed nations still subsidize energy for their citizens.
He also expressed concern over regulatory inefficiencies and corruption within Nigeria’s electricity sector, suggesting that reform must go beyond pricing and include cleaning up governance structures.
