Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o has shared her 10-year struggle with uterine fibroids, urging an end to the silence and normalisation surrounding women’s pain.
In Instagram posts, the Oscar-winning star revealed she was diagnosed with 30 uterine fibroids in 2014, the same year she won an Academy Award for 12 Years a Slave. She underwent surgery to remove them and recalled asking her doctor if recurrence could be prevented.
“She said, ‘You can’t. It’s only a matter of time until they grow again,’” Nyong’o wrote, highlighting the lack of preventive options and the need for greater awareness.
