French Alps Snow Melts Rapidly Amid June Heatwave, Threatening Water Supplies

The June heatwave has accelerated snow and glacier melt in the French Alps, causing water shortages at mountain shelters just as the summer hiking season begins.

“Everything has dried up,” said Noemie Dagan, caretaker at the Selle refuge (2,673m) in the Ecrins range. The shelter depends on water streaming down from the mountains, and if it runs out, it will have to close.
