AU Court Blocks Gbagbo, Soro from Contesting Ivory Coast Elections
The African Union’s human rights court has rejected petitions from Ivory Coast’s former president Laurent Gbagbo and ex-prime minister Guillaume Soro seeking to overturn bans preventing them from contesting upcoming elections.
Both politicians are blocked from running due to criminal convictions linked to their roles in the country’s civil war. Gbagbo argued his conviction violated his rights and blocked his political comeback, while Soro also sought clearance to contest despite his criminal record.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights dismissed both petitions, effectively keeping them out of this year’s elections in Ivory Coast.
