Young self-proclaimed socialist Zohran Mamdani was on the verge of a remarkable win Wednesday in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, soundly defeating his scandal-tainted establishment opponent in a contest viewed as a battle over the Democratic Party’s future direction.
Although final results were still pending, the 33-year-old Mamdani — who would become the city’s first Muslim mayor — held such a decisive lead that his main rival, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, conceded defeat overnight.
Reacting to the primary outcome in his former hometown, Donald Trump slammed Mamdani as “a 100% Communist Lunatic” and claimed Democrats had “crossed the line” by backing him.
